Do You Need a Visa to Enter Malaysia in 2026?

Choose the correct Malaysian entry route, apply via the official eVISA where needed, complete MDAC on time and verify your actual stay.

Travelling to Malaysia? Three different checks must succeed: your passport's entry eligibility, your visa if required, and the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) if applicable. The arrival card is not a visa, and a visa does not guarantee the length of stay Immigration will grant at the border.

1. Decide whether a visa is actually necessary

The relevant factors are passport nationality and type, purpose, planned stay and the jurisdiction in which you are applying. A long-term residence card from a third country does not turn you into a national of that country. Check eligibility for your own ordinary passport rather than copying another traveller's 30- or 90-day example.

For a person requiring eVISA, the Immigration Department's official MYVISA FAQ says the recognised portal is malaysiavisa.imi.gov.my. An individual cannot obtain a fresh tourist eVISA while already in Malaysia through that normal personal route. The FAQ recommends application at least 14 days before travel, and describes ordinary processing of 2–7 working days, excluding incomplete files, interviews, holidays and other delays. Neither number guarantees approval by your flight date.

Example: A traveller has a flight next Friday, but the official portal requests new bank or itinerary evidence on Wednesday. A payment receipt or application marked Under Review does not authorise boarding as though a visa were already issued. Inspect an approved downloadable eVISA and its passport number before committing.

2. Complete MDAC within the correct window

Use only the official Malaysia Digital Arrival Card site. Its form accepts a trip arriving within three days including the submission date. The standard visitor should prepare passport, arrival/departure dates, flight or transport details, place of embarkation and first Malaysian accommodation. Save the generated acknowledgement.

Not every traveller must submit MDAC. The exemptions described by Malaysian immigration include Singapore citizens, certain diplomatic/official passport holders, Malaysian permanent residents and qualifying long-term pass holders, and specific border-document arrangements. Whether your exact pass falls in an exemption should be confirmed against the latest portal information: do not treat an ordinary tourist stamp as a long-term pass.

Which travellers does the government's published exemption poster list? The Malaysian Immigration MDAC eligibility infographic, linked on its current official MDAC portal, lists Singapore citizens; diplomatic/official passport holders; Malaysian permanent residents and long-term pass holders; and holders of the specified Brunei General Certificate of Identity / Brunei–Malaysia frequent-traveller, Thailand border-pass and Indonesian cross-border travel documents. Its own banner says the scheme was mandatory from 1 January 2024; this is not a new 2026 amendment or a guarantee that every document with a similar name qualifies. Confirm your actual still-valid status and any newer instruction on the Immigration MDAC site before deciding not to file. A long-stay application pending approval, a tourist stamp or merely residing in Singapore is not necessarily an exempt qualifying document.

Example: If your flight lands on 22 November, check the official portal around 20–21 November, rather than trying to file weeks early or buying a third-party arrival-card service. The declaration is a data submission—not a government fee-based “fast track visa”.

3. Before boarding and at the border

Keep a travel folder with your passport validity and available pages, issued visa or approval where required, onward/return plan, reachable accommodation address, funds/sponsor documents if relevant and MDAC confirmation. The official MYVISA FAQ specifies at least three blank passport pages for eVISA eligibility; that is not proof that every visa-exempt traveller has an identical three-page rule. Verify current entry-passport validity requirements for your nationality.

If connecting through KLIA, check terminal, airline, checked-through bags, separate tickets and transit immigration. East Malaysian states Sabah and Sarawak may operate additional checks for entry from Peninsular Malaysia: take passport and current entry permission even on a domestic-looking itinerary.

At entry, inspect the actual permitted-until date and any conditions. An eVISA's overall validity, number of entries and permitted stay are different. A multiple-entry visa is not permission to live indefinitely or work for a local company.

4. If something goes wrong

Visa pending when the airline requests it: Ask the Malaysian mission/official eVISA support about the file; do not rely on an agent's screenshot or assume that submitting MDAC solves it.

Missed MDAC: Use the official registration form as directed by Immigration and contact the carrier/authority if necessary; do not pay a fake portal claiming government fines.

Different passport number: Seek official correction guidance before travelling; a visa associated with a different passport is a boarding risk.

Longer stay or new job: Check Malaysia work and long stays before the current admission expires. A visitor admission and MDAC never grant local work authorisation.

Before travelling, check your passport-specific visa route, the MDAC deadline, and the stay period you will receive. If anything remains unclear, contact the Malaysian mission with your nationality, residence country and actual travel purpose.
