How to Get from Kuala Lumpur Airport to the City

Compare train and road transfers from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) to the city, including Terminal 1 and 2, KL Sentral and your hotel.

Arriving at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 1 or 2? Calculate the whole trip to your hotel, not just the train fare to KL Sentral. Kuala Lumpur's first travel decision often happens at the airport: take a train to KL Sentral, or go directly to your hotel by road? The right option depends on where you are staying, when you land and how many people are travelling.

On separate tickets via Kuala Lumpur, use our KLIA self-transfer worksheet to check terminal changes, Malaysian entry procedures and the onward flight's bag-drop deadline.

1. KLIA T1/T2: two airport train services

Kuala Lumpur International Airport has Terminal 1 (T1) and Terminal 2 (T2). Both are served by the rail link to KL Sentral. The two airport train products have different stopping patterns:

ServiceBest use casePublished operator information
KLIA EkspresFast airport-to-KL Sentral tripRegular express run between KL Sentral and T1 is around 28 minutes, with additional time to T2
KLIA TransitTravel to or from intermediate stationsStops include Salak Tinggi, Putrajaya & Cyberjaya and Bandar Tasik Selatan
Direct road transferFinal address not near KL Sentral or other rail linesCompare total price, traffic exposure and luggage handling

The KLIA Ekspres operator lists an adult ordinary one-way KL Sentral–KLIA train fare of RM55 and a return fare of RM100 for the airport service, but online discounts, passenger ages and other promotions can change what you pay. The KLIA Transit timetable separately lists stops at Bandar Tasik Selatan, Putrajaya & Cyberjaya and Salak Tinggi. The operator publishes schedules and fares online. As of this guide's review of those source pages, it lists different intervals for Ekspres and Transit, and the service pattern changes at night. Check the date-specific schedule rather than assuming a fixed train frequency.

2. KL Sentral is not your hotel

An airport train ticket gets you to KL Sentral, not automatically to KLCC, Bukit Bintang, Bangsar or Mont Kiara. You may still need another urban railway, bus, taxi or ride-hail transfer.

For a hotel near a connected rail station, the train-plus-rail plan can be attractive. For a group with suitcases staying far from a rail stop, compare it with one direct car trip.

A simple total-cost comparison:

  1. Calculate each passenger's train ticket.
  2. Add the fare of any urban rail or taxi needed after KL Sentral.
  3. Include expected waiting time and walking with bags.
  4. Compare that door-to-door total with a quoted car journey.
  5. Keep extra time for immigration, baggage reclaim or severe traffic.

3. Urban rail, payment and real transfers

Greater Kuala Lumpur uses multiple rail systems—including MRT, LRT and Monorail—alongside buses. Check the operator and exact route rather than assuming the nearest two train stations are on the same line.

If you are considering housing for a longer stay, try the weekday commute in both directions. Being near a station is not enough if the workplace requires multiple transfers or a long walk.

For tourist trips, list attractions by station and cluster nearby activities together. A route involving a rail segment plus a 15-minute walk in tropical heat may feel very different from the map estimate.

4. Trips outside Kuala Lumpur

Penang, Langkawi, Sabah and Sarawak need separate planning. Some connections are via flight, ferry or long-distance road transport. Do not assume a Kuala Lumpur public transport card covers regional travel.

5. Avoid the most expensive arrival mistakes

  • Mixing up KLIA T1 and KLIA T2 when arranging pickup.
  • Booking an airport train without checking how to reach the final hotel from KL Sentral.
  • Assuming late-night frequencies are the same as daytime ones.
  • Treating airport buses, local commuter rail and the express train as one ticketing system.
  • Forgetting that travel with children or heavy luggage changes the best option.

If you arrive late or have a separate onward ticket, check the last train and the time needed for immigration, baggage and the transfer to your actual destination. A cheaper fare to KL Sentral may not be cheaper or safer once the final leg is included. Use the operator's schedule for your travel date.
