The Shuttle Tebrau is a short cross-border train between Singapore's Woodlands Train Checkpoint and Johor Bahru's JB Sentral in Malaysia. The train ride itself takes about five minutes, but buying a ticket does not complete either country's immigration checks. You book against your actual passport, carry that passport to the station and reach the boarding gate while it is open. The most important difference is that Woodlands closes its train boarding gate 20 minutes before departure; JB Sentral closes 10 minutes before departure. Arriving at the platform just before departure is too late.
For a first-time visitor, the train can remove the road-traffic uncertainty of crossing the Causeway by bus, but passport checks, queues and the journey to the train checkpoint still take time. It is a specific train service, not Singapore's MRT or the proposed Rapid Transit System (RTS Link).
The money and timing for each direction
KTMB (Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad), Malaysia's railway operator, publishes these Shuttle Tebrau conditions for passengers travelling with foreign passports:
- Johor Bahru (JB Sentral) → Singapore (Woodlands): RM5 per paying passenger. The JB gate opens 30 minutes before departure and closes 10 minutes before it.
- Singapore (Woodlands) → Johor Bahru (JB Sentral): SGD5 equivalent per non-Malaysian paying passenger. KTMB notes that the Singapore-dollar fare is converted to Malaysian ringgit for payment, so the charge in your payment channel may be displayed in ringgit. The Woodlands gate opens 40 minutes before departure and closes 20 minutes before it.
- Under four years old: no fare, but the child must be registered at the station ticket counter. KTMB's published ticket conditions require this at least two hours before departure (subject to counter hours). Aged four or older, a child needs a paid ticket; there is no Shuttle Tebrau child concession.
These are the operator's published fare rules, not a promise that a seat is available or a live exchange-rate conversion. Malaysians have different eligibility/account-verification rules on Woodlands-origin tickets. The official KTMB Shuttle Tebrau FAQ is the booking reference.
Example of the gate deadline, not a real published train time: If a Woodlands ticket says 10:00, the gate is open from 09:20 to 09:40. Getting there at 09:42 means you have missed the railway boarding gate, even though the train has not left. For a hypothetical 10:00 JB Sentral departure, the gate instead runs from 09:30 to 09:50. Plan to arrive well before opening if you need immigration processing or counter help; these opening times are not a safe arrival target.
A family budget with the child rule included
Two non-Malaysian adults travelling Woodlands → JB Sentral with a three-year-old have an operator fare reference of 2 × SGD5 = SGD10 equivalent; the child travels free only after counter registration. Change the child to five years old and the reference becomes 3 × SGD5 = SGD15 equivalent. Returning JB Sentral → Woodlands with three paying passengers is 3 × RM5 = RM15. This is the actual published per-person tariff applied to an example family, not a converted total in one currency and not a quotation for a particular train.
A family of five paying passengers also needs to know KTMB's per-transaction limit: up to six tickets online, but up to four at a counter transaction. A group can be split into more than one purchase; do not assume this reserves adjacent seats.
Book with the passport you will carry
You can book at the official KTMB ticket site or the ticket counters at JB Sentral and Woodlands Train Checkpoint. The booking needs each passenger's name, passport number and passport expiry date. The original valid passport is the railway boarding credential scanned at the automatic controller gate; a screenshot of a booking or a generic QR code is not a substitute for the passport.
Passport typing mistakes matter more than a missed app notification. KTMB's ticket conditions do not permit changing a Shuttle Tebrau passenger's name or passport number after purchase. Check those details character by character before paying. If you have already bought a ticket using the wrong number, contact KTMB about cancellation and a fresh booking subject to seat availability; do not promise a counter amendment.
The operator's rail-specific FAQ references at least 30 days of passport validity for the JB-to-Woodlands rail ticket and booking. That is not Singapore immigration permission. Singapore's Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) advises overseas travellers to hold at least six months of passport validity. A passport with just 45 days remaining might satisfy the railway's narrow ticket-input rule but not the Singapore entry requirement. Never treat a successful KTMB payment as proof of visa eligibility, admissibility or a sufficient passport.
Two separate borders: the paperwork for each direction
Entering Singapore from Johor Bahru: First work out whether your nationality requires a Singapore visa; ICA says a visa is a pre-entry document, not a guarantee of admission. A short-term visitor must also submit the free Singapore Arrival Card (SGAC) within three days before arrival, including arrival day. Use the official ICA SGAC service, not a paid look-alike website. The SGAC is not the entry visa. Singapore residents and some other travellers have specific exemptions; the simple short-term-visitor example here is not a universal rule for every passport holder.
Entering Malaysia from Singapore: Most foreign visitors who are not exempt need Malaysia's Digital Arrival Card (MDAC), submitted on the Malaysian Immigration Department's official website in the three-day arrival window. The form does not replace a visa for someone who requires one. Malaysia also examines valid documents, return/onward arrangements, lodging and purpose of travel under its tourism-ministry entry guidance.
At the stations, follow the signs and officers through the applicable departure and arrival border controls. Woodlands Train Checkpoint is the rail checkpoint, at 11 Woodlands Crossing, not the bus/car lanes of the nearby Woodlands road checkpoint. Singapore's MyICA land-vehicle QR-code facility should not be mistaken for permission to board Shuttle Tebrau without the original passport. The KTMB train-ticket gate and the two countries' immigration checks are different decisions made by different authorities.
Three mistakes that change the journey
1. You have a paid ticket but arrive at Woodlands 18 minutes before departure. The 20-minute gate cutoff has passed. KTMB's conditions say passengers cannot enter after gate closure and do not receive a refund merely for missing the gate. Ask the operator about a newly available later train; you cannot assume that your existing seat transfers. A bus is a separate cross-border journey and still requires immigration clearance.
2. A couple brings a three-year-old but has booked only the adult tickets. The child can ride free, but must be registered at the counter, with KTMB's conditions calling for registration at least two hours before departure. The 40-minute Woodlands boarding window does not waive the earlier child registration. If the family instead has a four-year-old, obtain a paid child passenger ticket. Keep the child's valid travel document and follow border-officer instructions for the child.
3. A foreign visitor books using a passport with two months remaining. The train booking may appear to succeed because KTMB's rail rule is much shorter; that does not solve the Singapore ICA six-month advice or any visa requirements. Resolve entry-document eligibility before purchasing a non-flexible departure. A mistaken passport number also cannot simply be edited on a Shuttle Tebrau ticket.
What happens if your plans change?
For voluntary cancellation, the official KTMB FAQ publishes 75% of the ticket fare refunded more than 72 hours before departure and 50% within 72 hours. Its more detailed ticket conditions specify no fare refund inside two hours; service or administrative fees are not necessarily refunded. This is not a promise of instant cash to your original card: the published conditions direct fare refunds through KTM Wallet. A closed boarding gate or an expired passport is a different, no-refund failure; do not confuse it with an advance cancellation.
If KTMB cancels the train without providing alternative transport, the September 2025 conditions provide a separate full fare refund process; follow the operator's current disruption instructions rather than assuming the normal 50%/75% table governs an operator cancellation. The terms do not promise reimbursement for missed hotels, flights or other onward tickets.
For a payment charged with no usable booking or a mismatch in passenger details, contact KTMB Customer Service (+60 3-9779 1200, callcenter@ktmb.com.my) with the transaction and booking reference. Keep the actual passport ready, but do not send its full number through an unverified third-party chat.
For your journey: choose Woodlands Train Checkpoint or JB Sentral, confirm the ticketed direction and nationality-based fare, enter exact passport data, complete the relevant country's arrival form/visa requirements, register any under-four child early, then make the boarding-gate cutoff your deadline—not the train's departure time.
