How Can a Foreigner Open a Bank Account in Malaysia?

Workers, students and spouses face different document checks at Maybank and CIMB. Compare practical eligibility, the CIMB salary rule, refusal options and DuitNow QR alternatives.

You can apply for a Malaysian bank account as a foreigner, but approval depends on your actual immigration status, the account product and the bank's identity and funding checks. Your passport is essential; for many ordinary accounts it is not sufficient on its own. A foreign employee, an international student and a spouse with a dependant pass should arrive with different supporting documents. A tourist who simply needs to pay a restaurant may not need a Malaysian account at all.

The quickest reliable approach is to choose a specific bank product, match its foreign-customer requirements to your documents and confirm the appropriate branch or onboarding route before travelling there. Maybank and CIMB publish genuinely different requirements. Neither a friend's experience nor an agent's promise overrides the bank's current screening rules.

Maybank versus CIMB: why a single checklist fails

Maybank Kawanku Savings Account. On its official product page, Maybank accepts an original passport as the primary document for foreign applicants visiting a branch and says it may also require a valid work or student permit, visa or employer/education-institution confirmation, as appropriate. Its 26 October 2026 document guide also highlights Malaysian contact and address information.

Watch the digital application trap: the Kawanku page advertises instant opening in the MAE app, but the stated steps ask users to scan a Malaysian MyKad and activate by FPX transfer from another account in their own name. A newly arrived foreigner with only a passport must not assume that this MyKad-based path will work. Ask whether you should visit a branch with your documents. Nor does eligibility for one Maybank product guarantee every other product accepts the same applicant.

CIMB's publicly listed foreigner checklist is more prescriptive. It asks for an original passport with at least six months' remaining validity, then different documents for each category. In its current branch checklist:

  • Working in Malaysia: a work visa or Employment Pass with at least six months' validity, an employment letter, and proof of income showing at least RM10,000 salary. The RM10,000 income-document requirement does not apply to CIMB@Work payroll customers, according to the same bank page. This is CIMB's stated onboarding requirement for this foreign-worker category, not Malaysia's nationwide minimum salary or work-pass threshold.
  • Studying: a Student Visa/Pass with at least six months' validity, student ID and a university/college letter confirming enrolment, programme and duration. CIMB says foreign students can have savings accounts only under this branch checklist.
  • Dependant or spouse: a valid Dependant Visa/Pass/Spouse Permit with at least six months' validity; for a nonworking spouse, proof of marriage/relationship and bank statements or other accepted evidence of the family's funding source.
  • MM2H: CIMB lists distinct rules for applicants with conditional programme approval and those with an approved visa. For a particular approved-visa case with a fixed deposit pledged at another bank, its checklist shows an RM100,000 opening deposit with RM50,000 to be maintained. That amount is specific to the listed MM2H situation—not the price of a normal WNA savings account.

Worked decision: Suppose a new foreign employee earns RM8,000 per month and has an Employment Pass. The employee meets neither a universal “RM10k salary law” nor an automatic “all banks must reject” rule. They might not meet the evidence stated for CIMB's standard foreign-worker branch route; but the CIMB@Work payroll exception may matter if the employer participates. A separate Maybank product may apply different checks. The useful next action is to ask payroll/each bank about the exact product and category, not pay an agent to make the salary appear higher.

What to bring—and what to ask before the branch visit

Prepare your original passport, actual valid Employment Pass/Student Pass/Dependant Pass if applicable, employment or university confirmation, Malaysian residential address evidence if requested, phone capable of receiving bank authentication codes and honest information about the source of funds. A spouse may need the marriage certificate and the principal pass holder's related records. CIMB explicitly reserves the right to request further documents and verify submitted evidence.

Before going, ask the bank these exact questions: “Do you accept my pass type and remaining validity? Which product is available to my customer category? Can I apply at this branch with a foreign passport? What initial deposit, minimum balance and monthly fees apply? Can I use mobile banking and a debit card immediately after approval?”

Deposits are not the same as fees. If a particular bank asks you to place RM500 into a savings account and charges a hypothetical RM10 for a separate service, the first RM500 normally remains your balance subject to the product terms; it is not automatically a RM500 opening fee. These are illustrative amounts, not quotes from either bank. Confirm the product's actual schedule and how much money must remain in the account.

If staff cannot explain the rules for your immigration status, ask for written confirmation through the bank's official help channel. Don't surrender your passport to an unofficial “account fixer,” invent a Malaysian address or buy somebody else's verified banking app access.

Can a tourist pay with DuitNow QR without a local account?

Potentially, yes—but only through a participating foreign payment app. DuitNow QR is the Malaysian merchant QR standard. PayNet's cross-border inbound documentation lists supported regional corridors including Thailand, Singapore and Indonesia; it describes travellers using a compatible home mobile-banking app to scan participating Malaysian merchants' codes. A country's inclusion does not mean every bank in that country has enabled the feature. Confirm the actual app, merchant acceptance, FX conversion and transaction limits with your provider before relying on it.

A foreign card that works at an ATM cannot automatically read DuitNow QR. For a visitor, use a small test payment at a legitimate merchant, check the payee name and amount on the original app's confirmation screen, and keep a backup card or cash. PayNet's consumer FAQ explains that DuitNow QR limits and acceptance depend on the participating providers; do not copy a headline transfer limit into every cross-border QR situation.

What if the account application or payment goes wrong?

Your pass is valid for less than six months. CIMB's published worker/student/dependant checklist uses a six-month remaining-validity test. If yours does not qualify, ask the bank whether an extension, another documented route or a different account product is possible. Don't submit an altered pass.

The branch refuses your documents or online identity check. Request the specific missing condition, a reference number if available and the next legitimate channel. An employer's payroll relationship or a university's international office may help establish what documentation the bank recognises. Reapply only with correct evidence, not a false employment letter.

You paid a DuitNow QR merchant but the merchant says nothing arrived. Verify the original app's status and reference, let the merchant check its receiving provider and raise a dispute with your paying institution if the transaction remains unresolved. Do not immediately send a second transfer or trust a stranger's screenshot.

Your phone or pass status changes. Keep the bank informed of changes to your address, phone, tax residence and eligibility where required. Use the bank's verified support line to block suspected fraud, never disclose your OTP or PIN, and ask about account closure before leaving Malaysia permanently.

Your next move today

If you are working, ask HR about a payroll-bank route and compare Maybank and CIMB using your actual pass and salary documents. If you are studying, start with your university and the student-specific savings route. If you are a dependent spouse, bring proof of relationship and real funding evidence. If you are visiting, arrange a card and cash and test cross-border QR only after confirming your home app supports Malaysia.

For broader monthly planning, see Malaysia's cost of living. A bank account decision is about eligibility and safe payment access—not the same thing as your immigration permission or monthly household budget.
